Music and word recall: The strength of familiar melodies as mnemonic devices
نویسنده
چکیده
It is a commonly held belief that a familiar melody can increase memory for informatio n. The effects of presentation rate (fast versus slow) and presentation mode (spoken versus sung) on word recall were examined. First, a pilot experiment was conducted in order to test words for comprehensibility and frequency. In the central experiment, undergraduate volunteers were tested for word recall after listening to sentences presented in one of four between-subject conditions: fast tempo-spoken, fast tempo-sung, slow tempo-spoken, and slow tempo-sung. On a paper and pencil test, participants were asked to fill in each missing noun with the word they believed to be correct. Results show that spoken sentences were remembered better than sung sentences, but there was no difference in recall for sentences due to presentation rate. In addition, word error analyses demonstrated memory for semantically similar items across all conditions. Despite the common belief that familiar melodies can be used as mnemonic devices, the current study found that in certain situations, familiar melodies actually decrease recall.

The Effect of Mnemonic Key Word Method on Vocabulary Learning and Long Term Retention
Most of the studies on the key word method of second/foreign language vocabulary learning have been based on the evidence from laboratory experiments and have primarily involved the use of English key words to learn the vocabularies of other languages. Furthermore, comparatively quite limited number of such studies is done in authentic classroom contexts. The present study inquired into the eff...

Finding more effective ways of teaching second language idioms has been a long standing concern of many teaching practitioners and researchers. This study was an endeavorto explore the effects of three linguistic mnemonic devices (etymological elaboration, keyword method, and translation) on EFL learners’ recognition and recall of English idioms. To achieve the purpose of the study, ninety male...
متن کاملThe role of familiarity in episodic memory and metamemory for music.
Participants heard music snippets of varying melodic and instrumental familiarity paired with animal-name titles. They then recalled the target when given either the melody or the title as a cue, or they gave name feeling-of-knowing (FOK) ratings. In general, recall for titles was better than it was for melodies, and recall was enhanced with increasing melodic familiarity of both the cues and t...
متن کاملSex Differences in Music: A Female Advantage at Recognizing Familiar Melodies
Although sex differences have been observed in various cognitive domains, there has been little work examining sex differences in the cognition of music. We tested the prediction that women would be better than men at recognizing familiar melodies, since memories of specific melodies are likely to be learned (at least in part) by declarative memory, which shows female advantages. Participants w...

Vocabulary learning is considered to be the most comprehensive and the most difficult part of language learning for all the students especially for ESP students. These students complain that vocabulary items are too many and are easily forgotten after they are learned. Mnemonic devices, a group of mental strategies, are developed to facilitate vocabulary learning and retention for such students...
